Privilege Blog

Be Careful With That Spam Button Please; Also Some Other Notes And News

The-Care-And-Feeding-Of-A-BlogA few housekeeping notes!

1. While I’ve switched over to MailChimp, and Privilege emails with links to each week’s posts should be arriving smoothly, if you have a moment, I would to talk about when to use the Spam button in your email client and when to use the Unsubscribe link in the footer of the emails themselves.

  • If the email is from Ms Grace in Uganda who needs money, or offers to let you shop and get paid if you send ALL your personal info, or promises INTEREST RATES UNDR TIN PERCINT, it’s spam. Click Spam. Yahoo and its brethren will then stop delivering emails from that IP address, the sender will be blacklisted,. Their emails may even be blocked all over the Internet.
  • On the other hand, when you simply want to stop receiving emails from a reputable sender, say, J. Crew or perhaps Privilege, please click Unsubscribe. Law requires this be possible, if you don’t see an Unsubscribe link, the email is non-compliant*. Please report it as Spam, you do us all a service.
  • If, however, you click Spam for a non-spammer, that person may have to spend a lot of time getting everything back in order, and other readers may then be deprived of emails they in fact wanted. Feel free to ask me how I know.

2. A reporter interviewed me a few months back about second weddings. This last Sunday, the New York Times published her lovely article in their Style section. The link is here – paywalled of course – but very nicely done. Several other people are interviewed too – here’s something I said.

“My entire emotion the second wedding was ‘I feel like I’m made of glowing cotton candy…’ ”

3. The above article reminded me to go reread all the comments on my Married post, (thank you, you all were so nice) which got me to thinking how important beautiful photography is to a style blog. I thought I’d make a request. If there are any photographers out there in the Bay Area who would like to practice their street style photography, don’t mind working around a middle-aged lady’s desire to work in the early or late Golden Hour, and would find credit and visibility on Privilege to be of value, please get in touch. You know how much (little) money I make here, my ability to compensate is commensurate, i.e. I can pay something like $25/session for gasoline etc. I realize the idea may be completely uninteresting, please excuse my ignorance. It’s a blip of an thought inspired by this blogger and her photographer. (I find her 100% adorable.)

4. Those of you who read Privilege on the site, rather than in a feed reader like Bloglovin’ or Feedly, (my personal preference) may have noticed a widget in my sidebar, below my photo but above the ads. It changes from time to time. You may have wondered, what’s that? Well, it’s a thingie I put together using Shopstyle, featuring goods with a theme. Page through if you like, using the gray arrow on the right-hand side. And, as a pay-per-click thingie, it tends to pay me between $2.50 and $.16 a day. So, not funding my dream house in Napa, but fun. Also allows me to share items I like without over-weighting blog posts with stuff, stuff, stuff.

C’est tout. By the way, if any of you have questions about how to set up a blog etc., or how to earn extremely moderate but still fun amounts of money without full commercial intent, always feel free to send me an email at skyepeale (at) yahoo (dot) com.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your time.

*Fun fact. The law about spam is called The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 (acronym for Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited P*rn*gr@phy And Marketing.)

  1. I loved reading your quotes in the NYT this weekend! (I subscribe to the Sunday print version, and tbh, often read the Styles section first). Upon starting he article, I thought, they should have interviewed LPC for this! And they were smart enough to do so :)

Loved the cotton candy quote. So lovely :)

    1. Same here, except that it took me until last night to read the Sunday Styles section. Your quote made me smile. And is it possible that it has already been two years?

    2. @MJ, Thank you:). Very glad to make you smile. Yes, our 2-year anniversary is coming up in August!

  2. How did I miss that article? I wonder how much of the difference is having already had the party that fulfilled everyone else’s expectations, how much is a more relaxed relationship with one’s intended and how much is maturity.

  3. Well, if you’ve reached the heights of the NYTimes AND The Guardian, you are now officially famous on both sides of the pond – Congrats!

The housekeeping pointers were certainly useful, thank you. The spam button is my good friend.

    1. @Chronica Domus, Thank you! I confess, I don’t feel famous. If they had quoted my writing, on the other hand, I’d be over the moon. The wedding just seems like I was incredibly fortunate, and then told some people about it. Does that make sense?

  4. Spam, wedding and capitalism. Only you can combine all of that and make it a logical, fun read.

Still love your wedding pictures. So pretty.

  5. Loved your description in the NYT’s piece of the difference between how you felt at your first and then your second wedding. “I feel like I’m made of glowing cotton candy…” is just how you should feel. It was apparent in the photographs as well.

I’m surprised about the Unsubscribe versus Spam confusion, and hope that ends.

    1. @kcecelia, Thank you. It’s possible that the confusion is largely from readers outside the USA – which is wholly understandable.

  6. Lisa,

I read the NYT article. So exciting and wonderful!

As far as photos go, if you lived here in Wine Country, I would take your photos for you (for free). I am not as skilled as my husband – far from it – but if I take TONS of photos, usually two or three turn out decently.

Hoping you and I can meet up soon!
    Best, Adrienne

    1. @Adrienne, Thank you! And so nice of you about the photos. I’ve been doing them myself, with a tripod, but I don’t have a DLSR and I am dragging my heels about investing. And yes, let’s find a time to meet up. I would love that.

    1. It becomes more and more important to work with an ESP like MailChimp, VerticalResponse, MyEmma, etc. They have “whitelists” that usually handle the problem.

  7. Always happy to take another look at your breathtaking wedding photos and congrats on the NYT interview! Thanks for sharing the shopstyle info; I kind of like the idea of earning a little fun money without selling my soul, so to speak.

    1. Thank you. The widget creation tool is in the part of Shopstyle called Shopsense – just sign up and create an account. It’s fun:).

  8. I enjoyed that NYT post, and your quote, which was, as noted, quite apparent into he photographs. It never occurred to me that one would mark a reputable site as spam just to get rid of it, but I thank you for so kindly pointing out that it could just be a lack of awareness rather than a lack of thought.

  9. Loved this info on spam. I use Mad Mimi which tells me when a follower has labeled an email post from me as spam.
Interesting and makes one wonder, WTF was wrong with that post that they would label it spam?
I have a tripod and remote, but am finding it tough to use. If only my husband wouldn’t cut my head off!
I’m across the bay from you and frequently on your side. Would love to grab a coffee with you sometime.

  10. Oh BTW, I do like that Kendra Scott necklace so I think I just put a penny in your coffer:) I’ve been trying to figure out how to make a Shopstyle revolving widget, with no luck. Any idea how to do it?

    1. @Jennifer, Would love to grab coffee! (OK, technically tea for me, but the spirit is the same.) Let me know next time you plan to cross the bridge? And to make the widgets you need to sign up for Shopsense, which is a sub-product to Shopstyle. Once you do that, the widget creation tool is actually, IMHO, the best in the business.

      Glad you liked the necklace:).

  11. I might take you up on that offer of shared knowledge, Lisa. I have an author friend that is encouraging me to start a blog geared toward 50-something’s. I’m seriously considering it. I’m going to take the summer to get my ducks in a row, dot my i’s and cross my t’s.
