Announcing Rare Fiber, A New Kind Of Consultancy Deeply Rooted In Design And Culture

The Internet is a wondrous thing. At some point it introduced me to Grace O’Sullivan, connector par excellence, charismatic as heck. At some point, Grace asked if I’d join her in a new consultancy, Rare Fiber.

Yes. I would.

Here’s what we’re doing, and when I say “we” I’m one of 19 contributors. From the website.

We are passionate about advancing excellent people, organizations, and ideas. We believe in listening and pushing boundaries with style and design. We do this by weaving fresh, authentic perspectives through the fabric of our partners’ culture. We help forward-thinking organizations innovate through a collaborative, human-centered design process.

From an email Grace sent me last night.

Rare Fiber is not only about creating the next wave of consulting, it’s also about building a new lifestyle brand, art + business + design, and the people who want to thrive at this nexus.

One more thing, for you guys. Some readers have asked me over the years if I’d be willing to career counsel, or, alternatively, style consult; this venture is home for those services. I can be hired for 1:1 telephone consulting, as well as larger projects. In these early days we’ll give you a discount on my hourly rate on 1:1 work. The nexus indeed.

If you’re interested, you can submit an inquiry here. Or email me, as always.

To track us, if you are so inclined, you can follow Rare Fiber on Twitter, or subscribe to the blog. I’ve got a post up there now, Creative, Noun or Adjective? Felt good to speak in the less subjunctive mode; some things are certain.

Maybe you and I will talk about something you’re puzzling over soon. In any case, I wish you a wonderful weekend, and overarching success in inquiry of all sorts. It’s good to think big, as long as you think with discipline. Oh, and I thank all of you, so much, for giving me this space to practice.

@Candace, Oh, you are so nice!

  • The description on the website reminds me of a small firm here in Pittsburgh, Fit Associates, run by a couple of friends and neighbors of mine. I think there is a strong sense out there that there are new ways to do things, and are working towards that.

Marc and Hannah are lovely people, and you might find their site of interest. http://fitassociates.com/

@lc, Looks like a fascinating firm.

  • I hope it goes well!

I’m having a little trouble wrapping myself around what you’ll do for people/organizations. The line-up looks qualified!
We had a neighbor who’d been a concert pianist and crossed over to work for an outfit called “Gap International.” I wonder whether your group is a West Coast take on the same sort of services?

@RoseAG, Work will evolve. We can easily begin with design/marketing/product strategy work.

  • Congratulations! I’m sure it will be a great success.

I would however suggest proofreading the website. I just came across this:

On the other hand, there are design & innovation firms for whom I have the utmost respect. They’re hallowed halls are teeming with creativity, sterling principles and heart to spare

    First impressions and all that.

@aa, Yes, thanks, I did see that. You know what I wondered? In this day and age, does a lack of attention to punctuation/spelling read as more modern? Just a thought. I’ll probably suggest we change it:).

  • Congratulations! It sounds like a perfect fit for you. You are so talented!

  • Congratulations & best wishes! Sounds something like the team our vet consulted when he was starting his solo practice; he found brainstorming with them very helpful. And while I don’t see a mis-spelled word as something that necessarily indicates anything about a business, something happened yesterday that reminded me that people notice such things. Of course it was at the vet’s office, because I’m all about the dogs! Anyway, the veterinary dental specialist our vet refers to & the several others in our area are all booked several months in advance, so I had to to hunt all around the region to find a specialist for my dog who needs root canal. I’m very comfortable taking my dog to this specialist, who is the head of our state’s veterinary teaching hospital’s dental team, but I noticed when I printed their clinic contact info out that the clinic name has the mis-spelling “Vetinary”. And my vet noticed the mis-spelling immediately & said it made him wonder how the name of the profession could end up getting mis-spelled. I’d planned on mentioning it when I’m there next week & my vet’s response confirmed that it can cause people to question & possibly reach a negative impression about someone they’ve never met.
