The more I pay attention to style, the more I find myself singling out certain designers as my pals.
Take Isabel Marant, for example. I own two of her Étoile Isabel Marant jackets, one aubergine tweed, one black. They have served me very well, worn with everything from brown cords to Levi 501s and Doc Martins. Etoile is her non-stratospheric-in-price line, and although these jackets will not last a decade, maybe not even 5 years, they’ll give me a short glorious burst of frequent wear.

The thing is, once you get a designer’s aesthetic in your head, you start to look out for their work. And I kept seeing Marant’s iconic Dickers ankle boots. Everywhere.
But Dickers are often sold out online. I looked and looked for a substitute, but found nothing with that silhouette and detail. Or a low enough heel for my walking commute. Lo and behold, Barneys has boatloads in stock.
So now I can wear my purple tweed J. Crew pencil skirt sedately with low heel pumps, or pull on ankle boots and tights to edge towards Artsy. With a peacoat and scarf for walking in San Francisco. By the way, I haven’t bothered to spray the suede. If it’s raining I wear Kamik wellies. Sturdy will out.
When I get to the office I don’t need more than this old Target turtleneck tee to feel dressed. Wood heels make for A-1 stomping, and the turtleneck reads kind of Mod to me. I feel sneaky urges to don a headband, style my hair in a flip, and start doing the Frug. Oh that all our accessories might encourage us to dance.

Perfect! I have the Acne Pistols which fit the same category, I think, but I now wish I had something with a just slightly lower heel. . . .And you know you look awesome in that last photo, right?
Thanks! The Acnes are similar, as are some at AllSaints. AllSaints came out with the lower-heeled Jodhpurs after I got these Dickers.

For months I would see Katie Holmes photographed in these short beige boots. They looked kinda grungy, kinda messy. So was I blown away when I discovered they were the Isabel Marant Dicker boots that I had no idea I desperately needed! Suddenly they looked so much better when I knew they were Isabel Marant. I’m still on the fence about that beige color. Practical me sees me stepping in or being splased by something two minutes after walking out the door. I think black is a much better choice. Looks great on you!

I think these boots are fantastic – and you’ll wear them with everything. I have the Acne Pistol boots too and they’re a bit higher than the Isabel Marant’s, not exactly comfy all-dayers. You have a fabulous figure, by the way!

damn. i love those boots. but i cannot bring myself to wear ankle boots with my extra-large calves. i have a pair of lovely rag & bone harrow booties, but never wear them…

The outfit is terrific. It would also look good with a shorter version of the skirt (because you have tights on). I would take the skirt 1-2 inches above the knee with those booties and tights.

I’d tried it on too at JCrew, and liked it but didn’t buy because it just didn’t look right. This shot, on you–it looks right.
